Ithaca's Taste of the Nation was founded in 1990 with a mission to end childhood hunger in America through Share Our Strength. 100% of the money raised is used to give grants to organizations involved in mitigating childhood hunger (60% stays local.) Event expenses are covered by the Corporate Sponsorship's.The concept behind the name "Share Our Strength" is derived from the belief that poverty is complex; feeding a child is not.

In order to help you prepare for the big event, we've put together a list of Vendor FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), which includes all of the information you need to know before you show up to Taste of the Nation.

What permits/forms are needed to participate?
The event is covered by liability insurance issued by the national office of Share our Strength.  Below are permit requirements for:

 

Restaurants:

If you do not currently have a Restaurant/Catering Operating Permit from the Tompkins County Health Department you will have to pursue one of two options:

a) Complete the paperwork to upgrade your existing license to Restaurant/Catering Permit. There is no cost for this upgrade. - or -

b) Apply for a Temporary Catering Permit from the Tompkins County Health Department. There is a $55 fee for this permit.

All restaurants will be contacted by the Tompkins County Health Department and be apprised of what their permit status is and what they need to do.

 

Additionally, we need to know your menu item(s). If you have not already done so please contact Talyse Hampton with the menu item you plan to serve that evening. The Health Department requires us to provide this information to them in advance of the event.  

 

Wineries:

Taste of the Nation is applying for Farmer’s Market Event Designation. As of August 1, 2010, NY wineries are no longer required to obtain a “no fee” permit from the SLA to sell at farmers’ markets or farmers’ market events; however, wineries and microbreweries must provide us with copies of their Tasting Permits.  If you have not yet submitted a copy of your Tasting Permit please, e-mail it to tasteofithaca@gmail.com or mail to Brous Consulting 309 N. Craft Breweries:

Under recent state legislation, NY “craft breweries” (producing 60,000 barrels/year or less) can now sell their beer by the bottle at bona fide farmers’ markets, but they must obtain a no fee permit from the NYS Liquor Authority. Be sure to submit an application several weeks before the event (now would be great!) to be assured you will receive it in time.  You should email a copy of this permit to tasteofithaca@gmail.com and have a copy of the permit with you at the event.  Click here for the permit application.

 

How Sampling Works and What You Need To Know

 

How much product do I need to provide?

We suggest that each vendor bring enough product to serve 2-oz tastings for approximately: 500 if serving in the main event, 200 if serving at the corporate reception (VIP).

 

How much space do I have to serve and what else do you provide?

*PLEASE NOTE: We will not have access to additional items we may have been able to provide in the past, so please bring everything you need with you other than the items listed below!

 

Tables:

Public-facing tables:  Each food vendor gets TWO 6-foot tables with tablecloths. Each beverage vendor gets ONE 6-foot table with tablecloths.

Prep and staging tables: There will be additional prep and staging tables set up behind the public facing tables.  We will attempt to have one prep/staging table per vendor available, but some vendors may need to share due to constraints in layout.


Other Supplies:

Restaurants: Your table will be supplied with compostable products to serve your food; napkins, forks, spoons and paper plates.  If you bring your own, they MUST be compostable.

Wineries and Microbreweries:  We will provide pitchers of water, dump buckets, ice and a tub to chill your products.  

If you have additional needs, NOW IS THE TIME TO TELL US.

 

What if I want to bring my own service ware?

This is a ‘green’ event and Ithaca College is a very ‘green’ campus.  If you bring any single service items with you, they must be compostable.  It is important that all vendors help our efforts to reduce trash at the event.  Service plates and utensils are all compostable. Recycle bins are available for normal recyclable items.  Ithaca College staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide directions for waste disposal.  We ask that you respect their policies and cooperate with them fully.


Vendor Check In / Wristbands & Purchasing Additional Tickets
 

What time should vendors get there, and where should we park?

Vendor check-in is 1-4 PM on Tuesday, June 13th.  Once you arrive at the Ithaca College campus, follow the Taste of the Nation signs to the Athletic & Events Center where the event will take place.  There will be volunteers available to help you unload and transfer your supplies to your table inside.  After you have unloaded your vehicle(s), please park in the designated Vendor Parking area.  

Please be on-site NO LATER than 4:00 pm (Large loading doors close @ 4pm but access is still possible).

 

Do I have to “pre-register” my business, workers, my guests or myself?

No. We are not using that system this year. Your wristbands will be in an envelope at Vendor check-in.

 

How many staff can I bring for my table?

Vendors will receive 3 free tickets at Vendor Check-in for staff working the event (two VIP & one general admission).  If you are serving in VIP, all 3 of your vendor tickets will be VIP.

You do NOT need to identify or pre-register (see the next topic) your three free workers.  

 

At vendor check-in, you will be given a map showing the location of your table and three wristbands.  Your workers with General Admission tickets will receive their gift wine glasses and trays at vendor check-in.  Your workers with VIP tickets will receive their glasses and trays when they enter the VIP area.

At 5:30 PM we invite all VIP wrist-banded winery and restaurant participants to join us on in the VIP area for the Corporate Champagne Reception.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to mix, mingle and meet some of our important guests in a relaxed setting before the doors to the main event open at 6:30.

 

What if I want to bring more than 3 people?
Vendors may purchase additional up to 2 general admission tickets for a discounted price of $50 per ticket for additional workers or non-working guests. You will receive a bill at vendor check-in. Payment in full will be required.     

*****However, in order to get that discounted rate, YOU MUST NOTIFY TALYSE OF YOUR ADDITIONAL WORKERS/GUESTS before noon on June 9th (text 607-201-8183 or email tasteofithaca@gmail.com).  After the deadline, tickets will only be available at the door at full price ($100 for general admission or $150 for VIP).

You do NOT need to notify anyone of your three free workers… just your EXTRA workers or non-working guests.

 

Promote The Event And All Your Great Work In Our Community!

 

Can I promote my business at the event?

YES!  We encourage everyone to bring copies of your menu and other marketing items to promote your establishment.  All participants are also encouraged to bring flowers and other forms of decoration to dress up your table.  We do provide each table with signage with your business name on it.

 

Finally, we want to remind everyone to plan to stay around and celebrate with us, as The Destination will be providing dance music beginning at 9:00 PM.  

 

We are delighted to have you join us for this very special evening and thank you for all that you are doing to help end childhood hunger here in Tompkins County and elsewhere.  Please contact us if you have any questions about the event, the process, or special needs you may have.

 

Thanks to the remarkable generosity of our corporate sponsors, our 75+ participating restaurants, wineries and microbreweries raised nearly $57,000  to help end childhood hunger.  The monies raised will not only be used to help the important work of our local beneficiaries, The Food Bank of the Southern TierIthaca Fresh Snack Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension's Healthy Food for All, but will also find their way to areas of high need around New York State.  Important programs such as  the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will also receive funding through Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry grants program.   

The members of the event organizing committee are so very appreciative of the efforts and contributions of everyone involved.  Our fabulous team of Ticket Ambassadors once again rose to the occasion ensuring another successful year of ticket sales; local businesses donated so very generously to ensure that our Silent Auction Packages and Raffle Prizes were exciting and fun.  The Volunteers that pitched in to help in every conceivable way are truly the unsung heroes who are at the very heart of making sure everything ran smoothly.

 

 

Healthy Food For All – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County

Healthy Food For All is a partnership of local farms and Cornell Cooperative Extension in Tompkins County to make fresh produce accessible to low-income households through subsidized Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares. Families living at or below poverty receive a variety and abundance of fruits and vegetables at a price they can afford (Food Stamps accepted!) and free educational resources including nutritional cooking classes to support healthy lifestyle choices. Local family-owned farms receive a fair price to sustain their organic, ecologically and socially responsible growing practices, boosting our region’s ability to produce good food.

Benefiting over 400 youth and adults and nine local farms, Healthy Food For All has been identified as one of the most successful interventions to ending hunger and building community food security in South Central New York.

Thanks to the funds raised from Ithaca Taste of the Nation and the support of many local funders and fundraising events, Healthy Food For All’s small farms are making a big impact on the health of our community!

Potato preteens from The Learning Web

The Fresh Snack Program provides full servings of fresh, healthy, plant-based snacks and integrated educational “bites” to all students in each of the three elementary schools it serves in Ithaca City School District. Fresh Snacks also increase access to fruits and vegetables, replace less nutritious snacks, familiarize students with healthier food choices, and connect youth with their local food system and local food choices. Fresh Snack ingredients are local and organic whenever possible, and many are grown by the Youth Farm Project, where diverse youth actively participate in building a more equitable local food communities.

 A portion of the proceeds from Ithaca’s Taste of the Nation will support the Fresh Snack Program's efforts to serve over 927 students every week, in partnership with ICSD's Child Nutrition Program.

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier

Headquartered in Elmira, NY, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier distributes food and other grocery products to people in need through a network of more than 160 partner agencies including food pantries, meal programs, shelters and other hunger-relief organizations in Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins counties.  The Food Bank also administers several direct service food distribution programs including the BackPack Program™ and Mobile Food Pantry.  Established in 1981, the Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network, and a regional agency of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester. The Food Bank helps fulfill Catholic Charities’ commitment to build a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people by working together to build and sustain hunger free communities throughout the Southern Tier.

The Taste of the Nation funds raised help the Food Bank acquire and distribute food to neighbors in need through their network of member agencies and various programs like the BackPack Program ™. Started at the Food Bank in 2005, the BackPack Program™ distributes food to children at risk of hunger over weekend and holiday breaks when they don't have access to school free or reduced price meal programs. Children receive a bag of nutritious, easy to prepare food each Friday during the school year. The BackPack Program™ helps them return to school on Monday ready to learn. The Food Bank plans to expand the BackPack Program™ in order to meet the need of child hunger right here in the Southern Tier of NY.
